Neil Allen Baldwin, 87, of Danville, died at 4:06 a.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville. Neil was born on August 2, 1918 in Pomeroy, Washington, the son of Charles and Augusta (Sears) Baldwin. He married Ruth Pfeil on March 29, 1947 in Chicago Heights, Illinois. She preceded him in death on January 17, 2006. He is survived by his two daughters- Jane (Steve) Lucas of Westmont, Illinois and Betty (Lief) Thorsen of St. Charles, Illinois; one brother- Ewart Baldwin of Eugene, Oregon; five grandchildren- Cathy (Kurt) Mogensen of Atlanta, Georgia, Kim (Joe) Zielinski of Indian Lakes, Illinois, Jeffrey (Debra) Thorsen of Jackson, Tennessee, Chrissy (Vinnie) Singh of Bloomington, Illinois and Sarah Lucas of Fort Worth, Texas; four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, and one sister. Neil graduated from Pomeroy High School. After high school he attended Washington State, where he became an engineer. He worked for several years at Westinghouse and Public Service of Indiana until he retired in 1983. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Danville. Neil was a member of the Golden Kiwanis where he helped out with several volunteer projects. He was a member of the Kickapoo Karvers. He was a member of the ASME. Neil was a member of the YMCA, where he would go and enjoy swimming. He also enjoyed classic cars. Neil loved wood carving. He enjoyed steam engines and belonged to a local steam engine club. Neil called bingo at local nursing homes for several years. He also performed volunteer work at McKinley School. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. August 12, 2006 at First Presbyterian Church in Danville, with Drs. Revs. Jimmy and Katie Hopper officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 -`11:00 a.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements.
