Naomi C. Van Winkle, 96, of Champaign, passed away at 1:33 PM on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 in Champaign. She was born August 31, 1916 in Sadorus, Illinois, the daughter of H.C. and Mary Ann Wilson McQueen. She married S.M. "Van" Van Winkle on December 31, 1943 in Urbana. He preceded her in death on July 5, 1988. Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Ward of Champaign; 2 grandchildren, Brian (Kristin) and Eric Ward, both of Champaign; and one sister, Gladys Phillips of Kingman, Arizona. She was preceded in death by one brother, Lawrence McQueen. Naomi was a 1934 graduate of Pesotum High School, and then graduated from Barry-Castle School of Business. She worked for many years for the state of Illinois, retiring on May 31, 1981. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Champaign. Naomi's faith and family defined who she was. A visitation to celebrate the life of Naomi Van Winkle will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center's Champaign-Urbana Chapel, 710 N Neil Street, Champaign, Illinois. Private interment will be held at a later date at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Camargo. Memorials may be made in Naomi's name to the Champaign Humane Society.
