Miriam R. Miles, 86, of Danville, passed away, on December 26, 2018, at Hawthorne Inn where she had resided the last 3 years.
She was born December 22, 1932, in Loogootee, Indiana to the late Charles and Mary Ellen (OMaley) Strange. She married Richard J. Miles on September 1, 1958, who preceded her in death in 1995.
Miriam is survived by daughter, MaryBeth (Steve) Birge of Oakwood; sons, Terry Miles, of Danville, Ken Miles of Danville, and Mike (Christy) Miles of Carbondale; three grandchildren, Morgan Hughes, Sam Miles, and Katy Miles all of Carbondale; sisters, Rozella McAtee of Loogootee and Connie (Pete) Hillenbrand of Evansville, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary Ellen (OMaley) Strange; sisters, Margaret Smith, Marcella Jones, Lucy OConnor and twins, Mary and Martha Strange; brothers, Gilbert, Charles, Mike and Larry Strange.
Miriam was a 1950 graduate of Saint John's High School in Loogootee and a 1953 graduate of St. Vincent's School of Nursing in Indianapolis, Indiana. She worked as a registered nurse in Indianapolis, Los Angeles, California, and Danville.
She was an accomplished pianist and organist. As a young girl, she played for daily Mass at St. Johns in Loogootee, and as an adult for the choir at St. Pauls Catholic Church in Danville of which she was a member for 50 years. Miriam was involved in several Bible studies at St. Pauls. She also provided the accompaniment for St. Pauls Grade School programs, other churchs choirs, weddings, funerals and community events throughout the area. She enjoyed playing duplicate bridge and earned her Life Masters Certificate from the American Contract Bridge League. She always said yes to an opportunity for travel, and frequently rode the Amtrak to Southern Illinois to spend time with her grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1PM on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at St. Pauls Catholic Church in Danville. She will be cremated and laid to rest at St. Johns Cemetery in Loogootee, IN at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Crosspoint Human Services in Danville.
