Milbern 'Mel' Holycross

Milbern E. Mel Holycross, 85, of Westville passed away at 10:54 a.m. Saturday April 30, 2011 at Provena USMC Logan Campus. He was born on February 8, 1926 in Newtown, IN, the son of Carl J. and Olive C. (Hesler) Holycross. He married Elizabeth Hill on April 20, 1946 in Westville, IL. She preceded him in death in November of 1992. He later married Eleanor Dudich on June 10, 2000 in Westville, IL. She preceded him in death on June 30, 2009. Survivors include his son, Eric (Dolores) Holycross of Westville, his grandchildren Nick and Cassey Holycross, both of Westville, his great grandson, Lane Holycross and two sisters, Betty Mae Colwell of Tilton and Anna Louise Powers of Tilton. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Frances Hodge. Mel joined the merchant marines from 1943-46. He later joined the Army from 1953-55. He was a truck driver, retiring from Peterson-Puritan after many years of service. Mel was a fifty year member of the American Legion Post 51 in Westville. He was an avid Cubs and NASCAR fan. He loved gardening and taking care of his yard. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. A celebration of Mels life will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday May 4, 2011 at Sunset-Urbas Funeral Chapel. Raymie Gordon will officiate. He will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday May 3, 2011 at the funeral home. In lieu of flower memorials may be made to the Vermilion County War Museum.
