Michael Lee Johnson Sr.

Michael Lee Johnson, Sr, died July 27, 2021 at home, surrounded by his family at 9:20 AM, after a long battle with many illnesses.

He was born April 28, 1950 in Danville, IL; a son of Norma Jean Hicks and Garfield Johnson. They preceded him in death. Also preceding in death was a daughter, Carrie Johnson, and siblings Jack Johnson and Sandy Lynn.

He proudly was awarded his high school diploma in 2016 after having to cease his schooling to enlist in the Marine Corps for the efforts in Vietnam.

He worked for General Motors for many years before beginning his own construction business that specialized in building decks, docks and outdoor furniture. There was not anything that Michael could not fix and was happy to do so. He never met a stranger a day in his life and loved to talk. He enjoyed collecting old cars and trucks and Coco-Cola memorabilia. He would carefully wrap his vintage treasures so carefully that his family fondly referred to him as the "king of bubble wrap".

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Veronica; and their children, DesaRay (Isaac) Galbert of Rossville, Michael Johnson, Jr. of Danville and Jason Wayne Johnson of Danville; grandchildren Chelsi, Katie, Ben, Gabby, and Nate; brother, Gary Johnson; many foster children and grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Saturday, July 31 from 1 to 3 PM at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center located at 3940 North Vermilion St. Danville, IL 61834. A funeral service celebrating Michaels life will be held on Saturday following the visitation at 3 PM.
