Champaign - Michael James Luzenske, 53, of Champaign, IL formerly of Danville, IL passed away at 10:50 AM on Thursday June 15, 2017 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL. Michael was born the son of Frank J. and Sona (Firebaugh) Luzenske in Danville, IL on August 9, 1963. Michael is survived by his mother, Sona Morrissey of Danville, IL, one son, Ryan Luzenske of Dallas, TX, one daughter, Alison Luzenske of Overland Park, KS, one sister, Debra (Steve) Strader of Danville, IL, one uncle, Jim (Sandy) Firebaugh of Indianapolis, IN, one niece, Jenna (Greg) Butler, two nephews, Justin (Abbi) Strader and Jake (Meredith) Strader, five great nieces, three great nephews as well as special cousins, Jared Firebaugh, Jeanne Firebaugh, Jason (Caitlin) Firebaugh and Bonnie (Frank) Dunbar. Michael is preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and his father, Frank Luzenske. Michael's career work was in the investment business which took him from Champaign to Kansas City and ultimately back to Champaign. Michael spent many years in the Kansas City area where he was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, KS. He graduated from Danville High School in 1981 where he played football and was on the swim team. Michael loved Danville High School and the University of Illinois from where he received his bachelors degree. While attending the U of I, Michael met some of his most cherished friends as a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Michael had a deep passion for Illini football, and spent many Saturday's during the fall at Memorial Stadium. He was also an avid golfer, enjoyed horse racing and loved to travel, especially to the beach and warm weather in Scottsdale, AZ. Michael donated his time to mentoring kids through the Boys and Girls Club in Champaign and shared his love of the Illini with the kids he worked with. He was also fond of animals and had a love for horses and his dog, "Barrett". Michael's biggest love was his family, especially his kids, Ryan and Alison whom he loved with all his heart. Some of his favorite memories include getting Alison her first horse, "Lefty" and taking Ryan and friends to countless ballgames as kids. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday June 20, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home, 3940 N. Vermilion Street, Danville, IL. Brian Wangler will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Danville, IL. Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM Tuesday June 20, 2017 at the funeral home.
