Michael Hurley

Michael Hurley, beloved father, brother, and grandfather, passed away at 4:15 am on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, after a massive and sudden stroke. Michael was born of John P Hurley and Eileen C Swan on February 22, 1944 in Dallas, TX. He is survived by his loving and heartbroken wife of 52 years, Mary "Tina" Hurley (Martinek); sons and daughter, Michael (Julie) Hurley of Laguna Niguel, CA, Thomas (Megan) of Cameron, NC, Elizabeth (Sharma) Sookarry of Danville, IL, David (Katie) of Danville, IL, Jeff (Brandi) of Danville, IL, Paul Hurley of Danville, IL, James (Jenna) of Danville, IL. Plus 18 much-adored grandchildren. As well as his siblings, Tom (Margaret) Germata, Ted (Katie) Germata, Carole Dumont, and his special cousin Mary Beth Murphy. He was preceded in death by his parents and also his loving stepfather, John Germata, as well as his stepbrother Ron Germata. He also lost his son Mark Hurley in 2015, after being his primary caregiver for 30 years. His beloved baby grandson, Jamie Hurley, passed away last October, and our father missed him and Marky so much. Mike, together with his wife Tina, was the second-generation owner of the Country Store Health Foods. He focused on the business from 1979 until 2011, raising eight children who learned the value of hard work and respecting people as individuals. He was a beacon for those who needed some compassion and a listening ear. Mike loved humanity, all of humanity. And he was "Dad" to a whole lot of people who would otherwise never know a father figure with such a warm smile and loving hugs. He genuinely cared for all of his customers, and counted most of them as dear friends. He welcomed his children's friends with open arms and would make sure to always cook enough food for double the number he actually needed to feed, just in case. He spent over 3 decades serving his community with a love and dedication that made people remember him for his selflessness and tenderness. He taught us about the importance of quiet empathy. We can hardly fathom what life is going to be like without him. We will miss him every moment but look forward to that everlasting reunion with the man who gave so much of himself for the benefit of others. The man who Believed in redemption and forgiveness. The man who lived and had love for all. Solas Mhic D ar a n-anam. A celebration of Michaels life will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Danville.
