Michael Charles Shmikler

Michael "Mickey" Charles Shmikler, age 66, of Champaign IL, formerly of Highland Park, IL passed away on May 31st, 2019. Beloved husband of Michelle (nee Perry) for 35 years; loving father of Aaron (fianc Kristin Pokorski) and Jared (fianc Ivy Meyer); cherished brother of Robert (Barbara); David (Elizabeth Stein); Samuel (Amy); and beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his devoted parents, Marian and Gilbert.

Mickey began his career with the family glove business, Illinois Glove Company, in Effingham, IL, and transitioned mid-career to his true calling as a mental health counselor. Once awarded his Masters degree from the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign in 2004, Mickey was a devoted LCSW, earning the respect and admiration of clients and colleagues alike.

Mickeys fight against kidney cancer this past year was focused, passionate, and like Mickey himself, spirited. During his final days, he was surrounded by friends, family and many people who were touched by his kind and nurturing presence as well as his radiant smile.

Graveside service will be held at 1pm on Monday, June 3, 2019 at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Champaign, IL. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
