Merle E. Stevens, 88, of Vermilion Grove passed away at 4:07 p.m. Saturday April 30, 2011 at his home. He was born on June 13, 1922 in Danville, IL the son of Lute and Anna Stevens. He married Lawanna McCool on August 17, 1946 in Georgetown. She preceded him in death on September 25, 1996. Survivors include his daughter, Mary S. (Thomas) Stripeik of Chrisman and one son, Michael W. Stevens of Vermilion Grove, four grandchildren, Candice (Tom) Hoult of Chrisman, Tony L. (Kelly) Conrad of Vermilion Grove, Jimmy Stevens, and Kimberly Stevens, three great grandchildren Daniele Hoult, LeeAnn & Waylon Conrad, one brother, Ralph Womack of Villa Grove. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Ralph Stevens. Merle was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served during WWII in the Battles of Anzio and Normandy. He enjoyed fishing and playing BINGO. Most of all he loved spending time with his family. As per his wishes he will be cremated and his ashes will be buried at Vermilion Grove Cemetery. Sunsets Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
