Melvin E. Wilson passed away on August 19, 2016 at Carle Hospital in Urbana, IL. He was born September 6, 1926 in Georgetown, IL. He married Charlene Richards on September 10, 1949. After over 59 years of a good marriage, she preceded him in death on December 3, 2008. They were more than just husband and wife they were also friends and buddies. They had one son Richard. Preceding Melvin in death were his parents, Harley and Irene Wilson. Survivors are Richard, his wife Sue (Kokomo, IN) and grandsons Dr. Benjamin T. Wilson (Madison, WI) and William O. "Bill" Wilson (Hampshire, IL). Upon graduation from Georgetown High School, Melvin enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He served as cryptographer until the end of WW II. Melvin worked at General Motors for 10 years, General Electric 8 years, and retired after 25 years at Bohn (Heatcraft). While working he completed college and technical courses. Melvin worked as Data Center Manager while at GE and Bohn. He was elected to and served two terms as Alderman to the Georgetown City Council. He also was a member of the Georgetown Fire Protection District for 35 years. Melvin served as a firefighter, assistant chief, and trustee during his tenure. Melvin was a member and attended the Georgetown Friends Church. He served on various committees at the local church and at the Yearly Meeting level. Melvin enjoyed fishing at Kentucky Lake, first visiting there with Charlene in the early 1950's. He and his family continued trips to Kentucky Lake throughout his life, last going in 2014 at the age of 87. Melvin's family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Carle Hospital for their compassionate care of him during his final days of life. A celebration of Melvin's life will be Monday, August 22, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Sunset's Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home, 200 E. West Street, Georgetown. Pastor John Meyers will officiate. He will be laid to rest in Georgetown Cemetery beside his wife. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 21, 2016 from 2-4 PM at the funeral home.
