Maxine Ruby Hancock

Maxine Ruby Hancock, 89, of Danville, IL passed from this life with her children by her side at 4:50 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at Presence United Samaritans Medical Center, Danville, IL. Maxine was born October 6, 1924 in Danville, IL, the fourth of five children of Chalmer and Katherine (Wiese) Mills. Her parents preceded her in death, as did two brothers, Gilbert and Camerson and one sister, Ethel McCoy. She is survived by her sister Helen K. Collier. Maxine was a 1942 graduate of Danville High School. She married Charles (Chuck) W. Hancock on Oct. 20, 1945. She was a long time member of the Danville United Church of Christ. Early in her life, Maxine worked at R & S Printing and the Glove Factory. When Chuck and Maxine were blessed with children, she became a full-time homemaker. Later, after her children were older, she worked in retail sales. While working at Berkowitz Luggage and Music in downtown Danville, she sold luggage and fine leather goods. In 1976, she accepted a position in the Mens Furnishings department at L. Meis (Elder-Beerman) located in the newly developed shopping mall on Danvilles North side. She loved her job, and took great pride in her knowledge of the merchandise and providing excellent service to her customers. After her retirement and while out and about, it was not uncommon for her to be approached by someone who would then happily recount their shopping experience and express their thanks to her once again. Throughout her career she touched many lives. Maxine had a green thumb and loved growing flowers and tending her vegetable garden. African violets were her specialty, and she generously gifted starter plants with anyone who shared her passion for their beauty. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband in 1994, and her son Charles, Jr. in 2005. She is survived by one son David R. (Julie) Hancock of Covington, IN, and a daughter Sandra S. (James) Moulton of Danville, IL. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Bryan (Nikki) Moulton, Jason (Sabrina) Moulton, David Aaron Hancock, Terisa Hancock (Landie Bradford), Megan Hancock, and Michelle Hancock. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, MacKenzie, Brandon, Hannah, Alexia, Alyson, Aden, Tyreese, Aresia and Arlana. A celebration of Maxines life will be held on Monday, Aug. 4 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville, at 10:00 a.m. Memorials may be made in Maxines name to the American Cancer Society or the Parkinsons Research Center.
