Mary Nina Fisher

Danville, Ill. -- Mary "Nina" Fisher, age 100, passed away peacefully at 6:15 a.m. CDT Friday, November 5, 2010, at North Logan Healthcare in Danville, Illinois. Mary "Nina" Fisher was born May 4th, 1910 in Humrick, Illinois, where her father was the proprietor of a General Store. She was the seventh child born to John Milton and Cora May Onley Fultz. Nina was one year old when her family returned to farming, outside their hometown of Cayuga, Indiana. Nina grew up on the farm, and learned to cook and sew from her mother. As a young woman, Nina worked as a cook and waitress at the popular Green Shingle Restaurant in Cayuga, Indiana. Nina worked during the war years at the Newport Powder Plant. After the war Nina worked in the brazing department of General Electric for ten years. She later worked as the Head Cook of Danville Care North for three years, retiring in 1972. Nina is survived by her loving husband of fifty-nine years, Roy Laverne Fisher formerly of Kingman, Indiana. They first met at a dance being held on the top floor of the old Cayuga City Hall building. They were married in The Old State Capital Building in Springfield, Illinois and then settled in Danville, Illinois. Nina was known for her sweet smile, her wit and her kind heart. Nina was a wonderful cook and was known for her delicious pies and noodles. Nina enjoyed time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. Nina enjoyed reading, playing cards, and taking walks. Nina was baptized with her mother at the Cayuga Christian Church, and had been a member of The Second Church of Christ Church. Nina is survived by: her husband, a daughter, Cynthia Katharine Smith (Larry Elmer Smith) of Danville, Illinois, five grandchildren, Katrina Anne Smith(Nithin Shetty) of Hagerstown, Maryland, Brendan John Fisher Smith, and Julie Katharine Smith of Danville, Illinois, Phillip John Sams of Lodi, Indiana, and Diana Ray Swartz of Cayuga, Indiana. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Nina was preceded in death by her parents and five sisters: Myrtle, Lola, Daisy, Clara, and Donna, and two brothers, Benjamin and Leo, and a son, Phillip Wayne Sams, a grandson Mark Wayne Sams, and a great granddaughter Marki Jo Sams. Funeral services: 2 p.m. (Indiana Time) Monday, November 8, 2010 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Dr. Andy Spencer; Burial: Kingman Fraternal Cemetery in Kingman, Indiana; Visitation: 1 p.m. (Indiana Time) Monday, November 8, 2010 until time of services at the funeral home.
