Mary Mitchem

Mary Mitchem, a devoted caretaker and cherished matriarch, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026, in Urbana, Illinois. Born on February 19, 1937, in Catlin, Illinois, Mary’s life was marked by her unwavering love for her family and her dedicated service to her community, including many years as a valued member of the Carle Hospital Auxiliary.

Mary’s warmth and compassion were evident to all who knew her. She truly found joy in family gatherings, where her love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren shone brightly. A devoted mother and grandmother, Mary’s legacy lives on through her beloved family: her children, Curtis (Kenna) Mitchem and Chad (Tracy) Mitchem; her grandchildren, Nick Mitchem, Kyle (Kirby) Mitchem, Clay (Cassie) Mitchem, Taylor Mitchem, Drew Mitchem, Kelsie (Nick) Gray, and Tony Mitchem; and her great-grandchildren, Payton, Kendall, Kyler, Bennett, Emily, Lilly, Zion, and Maddox.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Homer, her sons Craig and Cliff, her grandson Ty, and several siblings. Though these losses were deep, Mary’s strength and kindness never wavered, and she remained a figure of support and love for her family and friends throughout her life.

A visitation will be held on Saturday April 25, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center's Mahomet Chapel, located at 1102 Churchill Rd, Mahomet, Illinois. This will be followed by a funeral service at 1pm. Mary will be interred at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign.

Mary Mitchem’s life was one of quiet strength, devoted care, and profound love. She will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know her, and her memory will continue to inspire kindness and family unity for generations to come.
