Mary L. Hastings departed from this earth and entered the gates of heaven on June 7, 2014. She was born on January 20, 1939 in Tuscola, Illinois and spent the majority of her life in Danville. Mary was a devoted follower of Jesus, a passionate prayer warrior, and a member of Second Church of Christ in Danville. Her family was her life. She had an incredible ability to bring several different family structures together into one unit, accepting and loving each of them, and modeling to all what it means for a family to be unified and in sacrificial service to each other. This family includes her husband Lewis “Gene”; one daughter, Linda (Greg) of Phoenix, Arizona; two sons, David (Susan) of Louisville, Kentucky and Scott (Kelly) of Evansville, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Josh (Kayla), Jennifer (Andy), Kyle (Hannah), Kirk (Ameillia), Koby, Alex, and Jory; five great-grandchildren, Gage, Gatlin, Delilah, Daphne, and Kayden. She is also survived by four brothers; Billy (Donna), Marvin (Mary), Charles (Annie), Richard; two sisters; Karen and Cindy; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Mary Wagner; a son, Michael; a brother, Chuck; and a sister, Anita. Much of Marys professional life was spent as an addiction counselor for Prairie Center in Danville and Champaign. Dozens of lives were saved, guided and changed through her wise counsel, compassionate heart, and tender ability to speak the truth in love. Besides her daily communication with her family, Mary loved to spend time with her friends, especially her T.O.P.S. group, serving and attending at her church, and reading her Bible and other Christian literature. Her daily phone conversations with her daughter in Phoenix were a source of joyful connection between the two of them. Her family feels an incredible void that will not be filled again until they are reunited for eternity in the glory of heaven. Fly on sweet lady; enjoy the reward that you have earned through the grace and mercy of Jesus. No more pain! Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 from 2:00 - 8:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center on 3940 N. Vermilion Street in Danville, Illinois. Services will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 11, 2014. Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Park.
