DANVILLE - Mary E. Niehaus, 96, of Danville passed away peacefully at 11:40 AM on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at Goldwater Care in Danville. She was born June 9, 1927, in Ewing, IL to Charles and Molly (Weeks) Clark. She married Richard Johnston in 1948, who preceded her in death. Together they had two sons, Robert (Janet Thomson) of Wallington, Herts, UK and William (Robertta Fisch) Johnston of Berkeley, CA. She later married Clay A. Niehaus, who preceded her in death on November 5, 2016. Mary gained two stepsons from this marriage, Jeff Niehaus of Champaign, IL and David Niehaus. David precedes Mary in death.

She is survived by her sons; five grandchildren, Charles (Kelli), Johnston, Margaret Johnston, Lane Johnston and Emily (Jeff Carroll) Johnston and Joshua (Karli) Niehaus, Seattle, WA, great-grandchildren, Elsie and Spencer Johnston and Jaylan Niehaus, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mary graduated from Benton High School and moved to Danville to attend St. Elizabeth School of Nursing. She retired from the Danville VA in 1987. Mary served on the board of directors for Landmark Credit Union, was on the advisory committee of Faith in Action and Parish Nurse for Ridgeview Baptist Church. She was a Life Master in duplicate bridge.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to her caregivers, Betty Wheeler and her hospice nurse, Marj, and the entire Carle Hospice team. They all gave Mary their love and absolute best care.

Per Marys wishes, there will be no services at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to 'In Memory of Mary Niehaus': Ridgeview Baptist Church, 3838 N Vermilion St, Danville, IL 61832. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion St., Danville, IL 61834 is in charge of arrangements.
