Mary Karin Berglund

Mary Karin Berglund, 84, of Danville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026.

Bor on December 12, 1941, in Danville, Illinois, Mary Karin was the daughter of Evert E. Berglund and Eva Florene (Meeker) Berglund.

Mary Karin graduated from Potomac High School in Potomac, Illinois, in 1959. She earned both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master's degree in Elementary Education from Indiana State Teachers College. She devoted much of her professional life to education, beginning her teaching career in Crown Point, Indiana, and later teaching in Donna, Texas. Throughout the years, she also served as a substitute teacher, worked at the Danville Commercial-News, and cared for others as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Although Mary Karin never married, she lived a rich and meaningful life devoted to serving others, nurturing her faith, and cherishing her family and friends.

Deer Creek Manor was more than Mary Karin's final apartment-it was a place where she found friendship, fellowship, and a true sense of belonging while enjoying its many activities and warm community. Mary Karin found great joy in reading, completing word searches, and spending time with her beloved family, especially her nieces and nephews. She was a kind and caring aunt who delighted in celebrating the milestones and successes of those she loved. She especially enjoyed keeping up with her cousins on social media and staying connected with family and friends. Mary Karin found comfort and strength in reading her Guideposts magazines and her Bible. She was also a devoted listener of church programs, especially those of Dr. Charles Stanley.

Mary Karin is survived by her two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Ingrid Berglund) Minnick of Logansport, Indiana, and Mrs. Joseph (Eva Berglund) Dunavan of Rossville, Illinois; her nephew, Daniel E. Minnick (Lisa); her nieces, Angela A. (Minnick) Crook (Kevin) and Jennifer S. (Dunavan) Thomas (Dane); her great-nieces, Lola J.

Thomas, Mallory (Minnick) Brew (Connor), Morgan Minnick, Chloe Crook, and Emma Nelson; her great-nephews, Caleb Crook, Matt Minnick, Jacob Minnick, and Gus Minnick; and several beloved great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, cousins, and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her father, Evert E. Berglund; her mother, Eva Florene (Meeker) Berglund; her brothers-in-law, Joseph E. Dunavan of Rossville, Illinois, and Robert A. Minnick of Logansport, Indiana; and her beloved niece, Kasia Minnick.

A visitation for Mary will be held on August 22, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 414 S State St, Westville, IL. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm at the same location, officiated by Pastor Dale DeNeal. Burial will take place at Gundy Cemetery in Bismarck, Illinois.

The family extends its deepest gratitude to Mary Karin's physicians and their teams, whose skill, kindness, and dedication guided her care throughout her illness. They are also sincerely thankful to the staffs of OSF HealthCare in Danville and Peoria for the exceptional care and support they provided.

Special thanks to the staff and friends at Deer Creek Manor for their friendship, encouragement, prayers, and support. The family is deeply grateful to the caregivers and staff of Accolade Healthcare for the kindness, dignity, and attentive care they showed Mary Karin each day. Heartfelt appreciation is also extended to the team at Transitions for the comfort, guidance, and compassionate support they provided to both Mary Karin and her family throughout her journey.

Finally, the family expresses its sincere appreciation to the Sunset Funeral Home family for their kindness, professionalism, and thoughtful care in guiding our family through this difficult time.

Mary Karin's gentle spirit, steadfast faith, and deep love for her family and friends will be remembered and cherished always.
