Mary Alice Bemis

Newport, Ind. - Mary Alice Bemis, 85, of Newport, passed away at 9 a.m. EDT Monday, July 16, 2018 at Clinton Gardens in Clinton, Indiana.

She was born on October 20, 1932 in Clinton, Indiana the daughter of the late Elmer and Doyne (Williamson) Fortner.

Mary married Lennis A. Bemis on July 19, 1955 in Grayling, Michigan. He preceded her in death on June 6, 1999.

Survivors include her son: Larry (Ronna) Bemis of Newport, Indiana; step daughter: Linda (Bob) Brown of Bellmore, Indiana; two grandsons: Quentin (Renee) Bemis of Portland, Oregon and Jon (Katie) Bemis of Mishawaka, Indiana, and one great grandson: Lincoln Emerson Bemis of Portland, Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her half sister: Irene J. Fortner Quick on March 19, 1997 in Los Angeles, California.

Mary Alice worked as a freelance court reporter for 57 years. Previous to that she worked at the Atomic Energy Commission, as secretary to the plant manager at the Wabash River Ordinance Works. Her memberships included The Motor Maids, Inc. and the Vermillion County Democrat Women's Club. Mary Alice served as Newport Clerk/Treasurer from 1986 to 2017 and Vermillion Township 1 Precinct Committeeman. She enjoyed music, motorcycling, boating, traveling, collecting antique car glassware and memorabilia.

Funeral services: 10 a.m. EDT Friday, July 20, 2018 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Rev. Lee Taylor; Burial: Thomas Cemetery, Newport, Indiana; Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. EDT Thursday, July 19, 2018 at the funeral home.
