Danville- Martin Carl Engel, 93, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2014 at Presence United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville, IL. Martin was born the son of Frank and Martha Engel on October 14, 1921 in Danville. On March 17, 1946 Martin married his sweetheart Betty Long and the two enjoyed 68 years of wedded bliss together. Martin is survived by his wife Betty Engel of Danville. He is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Martha Engel and his brothers Frank Engel Jr. and Raymond H. Engel. Even though there were no children in this marriage, Martin and Betty enjoyed watching their many nieces and nephews grow up over the years. Martin leaves behind many kind friends and will be greatly missed by Irene and Rick Bergoyne, Pamela Howell, and Melodie Huffman. Martin worked at Allith-Prouty for 20 years and then struck out on his own venture and became a self employed contractor. He built several homes in Danville and remodeled many, many more. Martin served 3 years for his country during World War II, he was in the U.S. Air Force from July 1942 to February 1946. He was a dedicated military man. During WWII he was only able to come home once during that time for a three day leave. He was a very patriotic and proud veteran. Martin enjoyed golfing during his free time, he even won several trophies in tournaments played in Danville. His other hobbies included carving items out of wood, fishing, and joking around with his friends and family. Martin was a dedicated member of the Second Church of Christ of Danville, a 50 year Member of the 32 degree of the Freemasons Scottish Rites Valley of Danville, and a Life Member of Anchor Lodge no. 980. A service to celebrate the life of Martin Engel will be held at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 11 am. Pastor Drew Mentzer will officiate. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 am to 11 am on Monday, December 22, also at Sunset Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, Martins family asks that you donate to the Second Church of Christ or the Danville American Legion Post 210.
