Marjorie L. (Johnson) Meloy, 95, of Danville, passed away at 5:12am (Thurs.) Feb. 11, 2016, at Pleasant Meadows Senior Living in Chrisman. She was finally able to rejoin her beloved husband Allen for eternity. Margie was born May 2, 1920, in Broadlands, Ill., the daughter of William Harlan Johnson and Florence Elizabeth Smith Johnson. She attended several Danville elementary schools and graduated from Danville High School in 1938. Prior to her marriage, Margie worked as a personal assistant to the superintendent of Danville Schools and in the main office at Danville High School. She married Allen Andrew Meloy on Dec. 26, 1948, in Danville. He was the love of her life. After their marriage, Margie and Al lived in North Dakota while he attended college and became a pharmacist. She worked in the animal husbandry department of North Dakota Agricultural College (now known as North Dakota State University). They continued to live and work in Fargo and Grand Forks for about ten years until their daughter came into their lives. At that time they returned to Danville to be close to family. Al died suddenly on April 19, 1965. Margie was also preceded in death by her parents and several special aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is survived by one daughter, Angela Meloy of Danville; a first cousin, Joe E. (Martha) Smith of Sidney; several second and third cousins; and dear friends who meant so much to her. She was a life-long member of St. James United Methodist Church in Danville, was active in many capacities of United Methodist Women, and served on the official church board for several years. She was a former member of Altrusa Club and a member of HX Chapter of PEO Sisterhood. Some of her fondest memories and best times involved the ties she formed with her PEO sisters, and she regretted that the last years of her life she was not physically able to attend meetings. Coming from a very small family, she was grateful that the many friends she made in grade school, high school, and throughout her life remained like family and were steadfast through the years. Margie's hobbies were sewing, reading, home decorating, cooking, and entertaining. She had a talent for each one. She took great pride in keeping her home warm and inviting and was known for serving delicious meals hosted with love at a beautifully set table. Since childhood, Margie was an accomplished seamstress and designer and created all the clothes for herself and her daughter for many years. She also enjoyed the challenge of making something new out of an older garment, and up to the end she would take a new garment and immediately started changing the sleeves, the collar or the trim. With the right opportunities she could have been a designer, decorator or event planner. She felt a special glee when she was playing Scrabble with Angie, sometimes staying up until 2am to finish a game (she usually won). After losing her husband at a young age, Margie still managed to create a good life for her daughter. In spite of her loss, she remained active. She was a stay-at-home mother when working could have made ends meet much more easily. Generous and thoughtful of others, Margie helped many people, often with the recipients unaware of who had helped them. She enjoyed taking food to shut-ins, keeping tabs on those who were ill or homebound, and expressing her care and concern to those who suffered loss. She was never too busy to keep in touch with old friends, and always believed "friendships are like flowers in a garden; they must be cultivated and nurtured." She loved her family and friends and making her home welcome to all of them. She was always keeping her eyes open for special gifts, stashing them away for special occasions. Margie was artistic, creative, talented, funny, clever, smart, kind, generous, spiritual, and loving. She wanted us all to remember these words from John Wesley: Do all the good you can By all the means you can In all the ways you can In all the places you can At all the times you can To all the people you can As long as ever you can. Those who knew and loved her will miss her greatly. Visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center on Sunday February 14, 2016 from 1-3pm. Funeral service will be held on Monday February 15 at 10am at the funeral home. Officiant: Pastor Zack LaCrone. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. James United Methodist Church, Danville, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. Please join Margie's family in sharing memories, photos, & videos of her life on her tribute wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
