Marjorie Holmes

Marjorie A. Holmes, 90, passed away Aug. 12, 2013, in Safety Harbor, Fla. She was born May 12, 1923, in Milford, the daughter of Thomas and Fern Williams Holmes, who preceded her in death. Brothers, Thomas (Bud), George and Jack Holmes also preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Helen Clark, of Oldsmar, Fla.; her beloved friend, Peggy Chase; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Marge earned her bachelors degree from Illinois State University in home economics and a masters degree in home economics from Michigan State University. She received an advanced certificate in counseling and guidance from University of Illinois. She taught home economics in Illinois, California and Michigan, ending her career in Danville. She taught home economics, accelerated social studies and was a counselor at Danville High School. When Danville Junior College relocated from the high school to its present campus, Marge became Dean of Women. Eventually she was Director of Counseling and a counselor at Danville Area Community College, retiring in 1981. Marge was a member of Altrusa and a longtime member of the Illinois Association of Women Deans and Counselors and received their award of Outstanding Dean/Counselor in 1980. She was recognized as one of the Outstanding Educators of America in 1974-75. Her hobbies included golf, bowling, camping and traveling. She enjoyed cooking and collecting recipes. A celebration of life service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Sunset Funeral & Cremation Center. Burial will be at Spring Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the DACC Foundation for the Marjorie A. Holmes Scholarship at Danville Area Community College, 2000 E. Main St., Danville, IL 61832.
