Covington, Ind. -- Marion E. Walters, 86, of Covington since 1998 and formerly of Kingman, Indiana for many years, passed away at 6:10 a.m. CDT Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Vermilion Manor Nursing Home in Danville, Illinois. He was born February 28, 1923 in Cayuga, Indiana, the son of the late Dock F. and Lucy M. Hold Walters. Survivors include: one son, Harry(Donna)Walters of Kingman, Indiana; nine grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; two sisters, Sarah Jane Hayden of Covington, Indiana and Caroline J.(Jimmy)Morgan of Silverwood, Indiana; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Earla Ann Walters and three brothers, Gerald, Thomas and Paul. Marion retired from General Motors Central Foundry of Tilton, Illinois after 24 years. He had earlier worked 10 years for the Cayuga Brickyard. Marion received his boot training in San Diego, California in 1942 and then was assigned to the U.S.S. Betelgeuse AKA-11. During W.W. II they transported troops to Sicily, Southern France and Okinawa. The Beteigeuse received six battle stars for her participation in W.W. II. She was decommissioned in San Francisco, California on March 15, 1946. After four years of service to his country, Marion finally made it home for Christmas. Marion was a 1942 graduate of Cayuga High School. He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Covington and attended Benson Chapel United Methodist Church west of Covington. Marion was a life member of the Covington V.F.W. Post #2395 and the Cayuga American Legion Post #263. He enjoyed refinishing antique furniture, gardening and country western music. Funeral services: 10 a.m. EDT Friday, May 22, 2009 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Ken Majors; Burial: Miller Cemetery in Lodi, Indiana with military graveside rites by the Cayuga American Legion Rainbow Post 263; Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. EDT Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Cayuga American Legion, 904 West Ferry Street, Cayuga, Indiana 47928.
