Mrs. Margie Louise Brasfield de la Vega, 86, of Gastonia, N.C. died Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Belaire Health Care Center. She was born March 16, 1922 in Quinton, Alabama, the daughter of the late Darmer J. and Sarah Maggie Brasfield. Mrs. de la Vega was a graduate of West Jefferson High School in Jefferson County, AL. Following graduation, she worked in the Medical Records department of St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham, Al, where she later met and married Dr. Raul Esteban de la Vega. He preceded her in death in 1989. She and her husband lived in Illinois for 46 years where she was very active in her church, East Park Church of Christ; was a Cub Scout den leader; and a member of Danville Garden Club and Vermilion County Medical Alliance. She was past President of the Vermilion County Medical Auxiliary. She moved to Gastonia, NC in 2003 due to health problems and resided for 5 years at Carillon Assisted Living in Cramerton, NC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her three brothers, Vann, Rufe and Jimmie, and two sisters, Verda Brasfield Shannon and Bertha Brasfield Brewer. Survivors include her sons, Dr. Raul S. de la Vega and wife Jo Anne of Gastonia, NC and Ronald R. de la Vega and wife Karen of Hendersonville, TN; four grandchildren, Ryan de la Vega of TN and Stephen, Richard and Sarah de la Vega of NC; sisters-in-law, Helen Brasfield of Quinton, AL and Maria Teresa de la Vega of Coral Gables, FL; and several nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia from 7 PM until 9 PM, Wednesday, February 11, 2009. A Memorial Service will be held at East Park Church of Christ in Danville, IL, 3:30 PM, Friday, February 13, 2009 with the Reverend Dennis Floyd officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Memorial Service. Interment will be private at the Danville National Cemetery in Danville, IL. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to East Park Church of Christ, 1224 E. Voorhees, Danville, IL 61834. McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia and Sunset Funeral Home in Danville, IL are handling arrangements.
