Margaret Sue Porritt

Margaret “Sue” Porritt, 82, of Danville, IL passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025 and is in heaven with her Lord and Savior.

Sue was born on May 17, 1943 in Peoria, IL and was one of six children born to Howard and Mary Wiles. She married Tom Porritt (who survives) in 1965 and together they raised four kids. They were married for more than 60 years. She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter Amy, both her parents, her brother Joe and her sister Mary.

Sue is survived by three kids and nine grandkids including her daughter Beth (Steve) Schendel, Tom (Colleen) Porritt and Ben (Heidi) Porritt. Grandkids include Grace (Jake), Emma, Jack, Hank, Jameson, Killian, Claire, Moses, and Meredith. She loved nothing more than to be with her grandchildren.

Sue loved her family and had a special bond with her mom and her three sisters (Mary, Iris and Nell). The Wiles Sisters always enjoyed a glass of wine, any game of cards and the Catholic Church. Family was sacred to her, and she never uttered an unkind word about those she loved.

Sue’s relationship with her husband Tom was an incredible example to her children and grandchildren. He was devoted to her every need. Over the past two years, Tom made the drive daily to Pleasant Meadows in Chrisman just to sit with Sue and hold her hand. The two met in Peoria and their first date was captured in a story by the Peoria Journal Star, which embarrassed Sue because it was “on the record” that she was dating Tom. 60 years later they were still in love.

Sue was a terrific mom. Perhaps her most enduring lesson was one of personal responsibility and resilience. "No one feels sorry for you," she would say, not with harshness, but with the loving firmness of someone who wanted those she cared about to stand tall in the face of life's challenges. She taught by example that self-pity was a luxury none of us could afford and that strength came from within.

Family was important but so were friends. Tom and Sue had so many friends who always came to the house but rarely knocked. They just walked in. Friends are too many to list, but it would be hard not to mention Jeanie, Karol, Carol, Bev, Joyce, Barb Q., Mary, Olga, Gloria and so many others. Sue was very welcoming and never let people feel like an outsider.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 30, 2025 at St Paul’s Catholic Church, 1303 N. Walnut St., Danville, Illinois 61832. Father Cyr will officiate.
