Margaret "Peggy" Johnson, 67, of Danville passed away on December 24, 2019.
She was born on November 4, 1952 to Bill and Maryellen (Morrissey) Harmon.
She is survived by her spouse, Glenn R. Johnson; sons, David (Haley McKenzie) Johnson of California, Jesse (Rebecca) Johnson of Kentucky; daughter, Sarah Johnson; brothers, Pat (Patti) Harmon, Mike (Rita) Harmon and Tom Harmon (who is still moms favorite) ; sister; Suzie (Dale) Salonen; grandchildren, Audrey and Carson Strawser; special friends and family Nancy Harmon and Shelly Stout.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jack Harmon; sister, Anne Harmon, nephew, John David Harmon and lifelong friend Bill Hagler.
Peggy spent her youth in New Orleans, LA graduating from Archbishop Chapelle High School in 1970 and moved back to Danville in 1974 where she met Glenn, the love of her life who she married on October 11, 1975 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Danville.
Peggy started her career as a volunteer with the YWCA Womens Shelter in Danville. She was a court advocate and voice for women and children who were the victims of domestic abuse. Her volunteer work led to her become the Program Coordinator or the YWCA Womans Shelter and Sexual Assault Crisis Services. Peggy worked for the YWCA Womens Shelter for almost 12 years. Her compassion and care for these victims led her to a career with the coroners office. She served as Deputy Coroner in 1993 and was appointed to Chief Deputy Coroner a year later. In 1999 she was appointed Vermilion County Coroner and was elected to the position in 2000, serving the community for the next 16 years. After being elected she liked to joke that she was the only one that could arrest the sheriff, having a special set of little handcuffs at the ready.
Peggy was a member of the Business and Professional Women, AMBUCS, YMCA Board Member, Illinois Coroners and Medical Examiners Association, Illinois Association of County Officials. She regularly volunteered to give lectures at the local schools about her career as a coroner and talking to students about the importance of being kind in times of need.
Peggy loved to give out free hugs and never met a stranger. After retiring from her position as Vermilion County Coroner in 2016, Peggy loved spending time with family and friends and rarely missed watching her Cubbies play.
