Margaret Mae Snider Roller Bortfeld

Margaret Mae Snider Roller Bortfeld, 97 years of age, died peacefully near her home in Richmond, California near San Francisco, on March 15, 2011. Born February 17, 1914, she was the second child of William Thomas Snider and Alice Fullington Snider, the descendants of pioneer farm families in Vermilion County, Illinois. She attended public schools in Oakwood, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1935, one of the few women of her generation to obtain a degree in science. She taught at Oakwood High School before her marriage to William Lloyd Roller. Three children came of that marriage, Marisa LaRue (Mary Margaret Roller) currently living in Freeland, Washington, Bill Roller of Berkeley, California, and Charissa Mae Roller (deceased). Later in life, Margaret returned to graduate studies in microbiology, obtaining her Masters degree from the University of Illinois in 1967. She continued to teach chemistry at Westville High School and Rossville High School until her retirement. In 1975, she moved to California and married David Bortfeld, who survives her. Friends remember her as a vivacious and loving person, interested in travel both in the United States and abroad. Though a native of Illinois, she loved California dearly. She was preceded in death by her sister, Wilma Snider Swisher and brother, William Thomas Snider, Jr. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by two granddaughters and four great-granddaughters. A Celebration of Margarets life will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 26th, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, a Life Celebration Home, a Life Celebration Home.
