Malcolm H. Aukerman Malcolm H. Aukerman of Newport, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 24, 2016, at age 92. One of 10 children born to Harry and Dora Aukerman in 1924, Malcolm grew up on hard work during the Great Depression on a small farm in rocky rural west-central Ohio. He graduated from Eaton High School in 1942, and was drafted into the United States Army later that same year. He proudly served his Country in Burma in World War II. Returning home, Malcolm often said he never wanted to leave the United States again, and he never did. Following World War II, Malcolm attended Miami Jacobs Business College, University of Dayton, and graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1952. Throughout his legal career, he was licensed to practice in both Ohio and Indiana. In 1956 Malcolm, with beloved wife Violet, moved to Newport, Indiana. She survives. Elected Vermillion County's Prosecuting Attorney in 1958, he would serve Vermillion County as Prosecutor continuously from 1958 through 1978. Malcolm tirelessly represented clients in his private practice: Aukerman Law Office at 350 Poplar Street, Newport, Indiana, from 1956 up to the time of his death. Malcolm excelled as a prosecutor; civil trial lawyer representing injured clients; and in the general practice of tax, business and estate law. He cared deeply for his clients and made it known that if they could not reach him at the office, to call him at home whenever they needed him, no matter the time day or night. His enthusiasm for the practice of law and taking care of his client's needs never diminished, and he donated his time and energy to many churches, not-for-profit organizations and clients. Malcolm was an old-school trial lawyer who fought fiercely for his clients, a trait he passed on to the lawyers he so proudly mentored throughout his career. An avid pilot for 40+ years, Malcolm loved flying but his happiest moments in life were when he was in the countryside of rural Hillsdale, at home in the company of his wife Violet, their children Lisa Aukerman (Turner); Bruce Aukerman and David Aukerman---their grandchildren Katharyn, Matthew, Hailey and Emily---and great-grandchildren David and Josiah. He was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was a wonderful mentor and example to them. In every respect Malcolm loved the life God allowed him to live, and was thankful every day for his upbringing, his family, and his work. Malcolm is survived by brothers Marvin, Donald, Norman and Glen, and his sister Rose Marie. He was preceded in death by brothers Emerson, and Gerald, and sisters Jane and Marilyn. Private graveside services will be held by the family with Reverend Donald Morgan. A celebration of Malcolm's life will be held in the near future. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vermillion County Christian Food Center, 355 South Main Street, Newport, Indiana 47966. DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana assisted the family with arrangements. Condolences: www.deverterfuneralhome.com.
