Danville - Major Frank J. "Coach" Luzenske, USMC Reserve (Retired), 84, of Danville, IL passed away at 1:57 AM on June 14, 2017 at Hawthorne Inn in Danville, IL. Major Frank J. Luzenske was born on March 12, 1933 the son of Frank Theodore and Margaret Alice (Keeler) Luzenske in Granite City, IL. Major Luzenske is survived by his daughter, Debra J. (Steve) Strader of Danville, five grandchildren, Jacob (Meredith) Strader, Justin (Abbi) Strader, Jenna (Greg) Butler, Ryan Luzenske and Alie Luzenske, as well as eight great-grandchildren, Mason, Carter, Braxton, Gia, Nora, Lola, Brylee and Brewer Mae. Major Luzenske is preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Margie Ramer, and shortly after Coach's passing, his one son, Michael J. Luzenske who passed away on June 15, 2017. Major Frank J. Luzenske is a retired Marine Corp Veteran. Major Luzenske served in the United States Marine Corp Reserves for forty-one years. The Mission of the Reserves is to improve and reinforce active Marine forces in time of war or national emergency. Reserves are responsible for providing trained units and qualified individuals to be mobilized to active duty. Major Luzenske served at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California, also, Twenty-nine Palms California where he trained for air and ground combat before moving to training officer. Major Luzenske also served at the Marine Corps Air Facility at Quantico, Virginia as well as Marine Corps Outlying Field Camp base at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Major Luzenske attended college while serving in the military. He graduated from William Jewel College in Liberty, Missouri and earned his Master's Degree from Indiana State University. Frank Luzenske, or Coach Luzenske as most know him started his teaching and coaching career at Oakwood High School later moving to Danville High School to teach and coach. Luzenske coached wrestling, swimming, and football. Coach Luzenske was active on the football field up until 2015. Coach Luzenske also taught history, ran the WECEP program and was instrumental in starting the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. As an FCA leader Coach provided an opportunity for young Christian Athletes a place to share their faith and appreciation for God through God. Coach was also on the local radio station. He did the Community Connection morning show and the weekly School Time show in which he was able to highlight Vermilion County's youth. Coach Luzenske loves to spoil people. He is famous for bringing sweets to the secretaries and staff at DHS, the YMCA family, and his favorite, the students of the Alternative Program, now known as Kenneth D. Bailey Academy. Coach Luzenske is always ready to help a young person, "They are great people!" As a dedicated Marine, teacher and coach Major Luzenske has set an example of excellence for all who have known him. Through values, humor, dedication, generosity, discipline and high integrity many young people have been inspired to become better people. As Coach always says, "If you are an Educator, you are a millionaire; kids know if you like them!' Sempre Fi!! Always Faithful! Go Vikings!! The family would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to all of the Staff at Hawthorne Inn in Danville, IL. Their care and compassion during his illness was deeply appreciated. Coach's greatest love was spending time with his family. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday June 19, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion Street, Danville, IL. Reverend Randall Robinson will officiate. Military Rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 210 at the funeral home following services. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 PM on Monday, June 19, 2017 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in his memory to the Big Brothers Big Sisters at 100 N.
