Covington, Ind. - M. Jean Alyea, 97, of Covington, passed away at 1:39 p.m. EST Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at her residence. She was born September 25, 1916 in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of the late Frederick and Grace Stowers Hartson. She married Harold B. Alyea on June 29, 1941 in Clinton, Iowa. He preceded her in death on November 14, 1999. Survivors include two daughters, Pat(Jim)Keller of Columbus, Indiana and Karen(Rusty)Peevler of Mellott, Indiana; two sons, Jim(Judy)Alyea of Houston, Texas and Jon(Michelle)Alyea of Covington, Indiana; nine grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Jean was preceded in death by one brother, Frederick Ray Hartson. Jean formerly worked as a bookkeeper in Clinton, Iowa and later worked at the former Ben Franklin store in Covington, Indiana. She was a member of the Covington United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's. Jean was active in the church choir and many other church events. She was a 1935 graduate of Lyons High School in Clinton, Iowa. Jean enjoyed square dancing, reading, playing the piano and all sports. She was a big Purdue University fan. Most of all, Jean enjoyed spending time with her family. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. EST Sunday, January 19, 2014 at the Covington United Methodist Church, Covington, Indiana. A Celebration of Life service will immediately follow visitation with Rev. David Anderson and Pastor Andy Martin officiating. Private graveside services and burial of cremains will be held at Danville National Cemetery in Danville, Illinois at a later date. The family would like to thank Jean's caregivers, Tonia and Emily of Serenity Hospice for the special care they gave their mother. The family request contributions to Serenity Hospice, 5 North 10th Street, Lafayette, Indiana 47901 or to the Covington United Methodist Church Choir, 419 Washington Street, Covington, Indiana 47932. DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana is assisting the family with arrangements.
