Kingman, Ind. -- Luther A. Melton, 87, of Kingman (Silverwood), passed away at 6:45 a.m. EST Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at The Waters of Covington in Covington, Indiana. He was born July 22, 1922 in Charleston, Illinois the son of the late William and Tillie Irene Jenkins Melton. He married Margie Edwards on November 30, 1946 in Covington, Indiana. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Janeen(Jerry Ross)Davis of Cayuga, Indiana; one son, Jody(Maureen)Melton of DeMotte, Indiana; four grandchildren, Meagan(Derek)Koeneman of Indianapolis, Indiana; Jillian(Trenton)Cheney of Wheatfield, Indiana; Mark Melton of Indianapolis, Indiana and Chelsie Davis of Cayuga, Indiana; three great grandchildren; one sister, Barbara(Robert)Coffing of Covington, Indiana; two brothers, Leonard(Sandy Robson)Melton of Indianapolis, Indiana and Dean(Rosie)Curtis of Covington, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents; adoptive parents, Norval(Daisy Melton)Curtis; son-in-law, Jim Davis and two sisters, Beverly Jones and Genevieve Clingan. Luther retired from Norfolk & Western Railroad as a telegrapher. He was a 1940 graduate of Cayuga High School. Luther was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Army in Campaigns at Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. His memberships included the Cayuga Christian Church, Cayuga American Legion Rainbow Post #263 and the Covington V.F.W. Post #2395. Luther enjoyed gardening and was a big St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. Funeral services: 11 a.m. EST Saturday, January 23, 2010 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Dr. Andy Spencer; Burial: Eugene Cemetery in Eugene, Indiana with military graveside rites by the Cayuga American Legion Rainbow Post #263; Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. EST Friday, January 22, 2010 at the funeral home.
