Lucille K. Downs

Cayuga, Ind. - Lucille K. Downs, 102, of Cayuga, passed away at 8:05 p.m. EDT Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at her residence. Lucille was born July 2, 1913 in Georgetown, Illinois, the daughter of Harry E. and Emma Belser Payne. She married Frank L. Mead on June 14, 1942. He gave his life during World War II in France on November 29, 1944. Lucille later married Lowell Downs on June 30, 1949. He preceded her in death on October 22, 1986. Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother and sister-in-law, James W. (Louise) Payne, and son-in-law, Tony D. Martin. Survivors include three daughters, Judy (George) Harrison of Banks, Oregon; Shirley Martin of Gessie, Indiana and Linda (Joe) Wilson of Eugene, Indiana; five grandchildren, Amy (Gary) Wilcoxen of Perrysville, Indiana; Scott (Laurie) Harrison of Forest Grove, Oregon; Joni (Andy) Wallman of Indianapolis, Indiana; Krista (B.J.) Witsman of Covington, Indiana, and Jenny (Bill) Behnke of Terre Haute, Indiana; seven great grandchildren, Maya and Alina Harrison, Chase, Cole, and Gage Witsman, and Joey and Callie Behnke. Lucille was a graduate of Georgetown High School. She was a homemaker and farm wife. An excellent cook, she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, embroidery, gardening, playing cards, bird watching, word search puzzles, and her home. She dearly loved time with her family and grandchildren. The family would like to give a very special thanks to Martha Fortner and Libby Swisher for the wonderful care given to their mother and grandmother in recent months. Funeral services: 4 p.m. EDT Sunday, September 13, 2015 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Pastor John Hawkins; Burial: Thomas Cemetery, Newport, Indiana; Visitation: 2 p.m. EDT until time of services at the funeral home.
