Lucilla Mae Smith, affectionately known as Lucy, passed away on March 22, 2024, in Salem, Oregon. Born to Mabel and Boyd George on December 1, 1929, in Rensselaer, Indiana and sister to Jim, she was known for her generous spirit and friendly banter.
In 1953, she married the love and joy of her life, William (Bill) Smith. They had two children, Brad Smith and Kim Maxwell and shared their life journey for over 40 years until Bill passed away in 1995. He never failed to make her laugh.
A graduate of Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Lucy invested not only in her biological children but also through teaching grades 2-5, mostly 5th, for 30 years. Some of her closest and lifelong friendships like Fran Moorleghen, Jim & Priscilla Bolton, Ron & Shirley Davis and Lyle Holycross were developed during this time.
Lucy's legacy is her deep connection with family and friends. Brad and Kim have spent their lifetimes close to their mother with Kim as her primary caretaker for nearly 15 of these past years. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive by her children, grandchildren (Sara & husband Tom Fox and Bryan Maxwell as well as Teresa), great grandchildren (Lincoln & Evy Fox and Jack Maxwell) and many friends. They will carry her legacy of joy, flexibility, thoughtfulness and humor.
An avid player of games, she would bring together large groups of friends to play Aggravation, Hearts and participated in several Bridge clubs for hours on end. She was known for her delicious meals, commanding the kitchen like she was captaining a ship... and if you weren't careful, you would become one of the sailors delegated to support the work of the delicious meal! Reading, celebrating with family and friends (especially Christmas), bird watching and spending time on the Oregon coast were some of her favorite past times.
Lucy wished to be cremated and will join her husband at Sunset Memorial Park in Danville. A small portion of her remains will also be scattered at the Oregon coast. In lieu of a service, let's honor Lucy by thinking of the wealth of fun, loving and side splitting memories together while doing some of the things she loved... she would want you to enjoy the pleasure of a home cooked meal. She would want you to send a loved one a funny or kind card (in the actual mail) just to remind them they are loved. She would want you to play games with your friends and family. She would want you to feed the birds and enjoy their beauty or watch the ocean waves on the shore.
She lived from the 1920's to the 2020's, such a full life filled with love. We will miss you Lucy, mom, grandma, GG, friend.
