Lowell E. Dixon

Covington, Ind. - Lowell Dixon, 86, of Covington, passed away Monday, February 20, 2017 at The Waters of Covington. Lowell was born January 12, 1931 in Covington, Indiana to Robert and Emma (Strawser) Dixon. On January 9, 1955, he married Marilyn Sue Adkins also of Covington, at the Benson Chapel United Methodist Church. This is also the day of the infamous rice throwing incident which was uncovered via photographic evidence. She preceded him in death on November 27, 2005. Lowell is survived by his daughter, Christy Dixon and son, Craig (Toyia) Dixon both of Covington, Indiana and two grandchildren, Brenna and Ethan. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and one brother. He graduated from Covington High School in 1948 and was a avid baseball and basket player at Covington with one newspaper article bestowing the title "Dead Eye Dixon". He also served in the Air Force, stationed in Japan, from 1950 to 1953. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he worked construction until becoming a farmer. It was in this profession that he earned a living for his family and provided enough for his children to attend college and for Marilyn and him to have a comfortable retirement which is not easy when farming around 500 acres. While farming, Lowell developed a unique ability to see Indian artifacts from his tractor. He was also a major contributor of work in the completion of the Trojan Complex for Covington Community High School donating countless hours and the use of his farm equipment. The completion of the complex was a major accomplishment for the community and was done with almost all completely donated labor. Lowell helped anyone he could during his life. There are countless acts of giving from plowing the roads when a major snow storm hit, digging projects for neighbors, donating wood and equipment for projects, lending a hand in construction (even if they were't doing it right), to just a helping hand when someone needed it. He also enjoyed woodworking and made many wood furnishings in his workshop across the pond from his house. Having a large number of hardwoods on his property, he also purchased a couple of saw mills to allow him to convert trees that had fallen in the woods into works of art. Lowell was an animal lover, having many dogs and cats throughout his life. He loved sitting in his chair and watching the neighborhood. You can be sure that you did't go past his house without him knowing the color of your car. He enjoyed watching the successes of his children and grandchildren and consoled them through their failures. While no marriage is perfect, Marilyn and he had one that could be envied. They are now joined in heaven looking down on the one's they loved. We would like to thank the staff at The Waters of Covington for caring for Dad and making his final years as comfortable and friendly as possible.
