Loretta J. Atwood, 83, of Danville, departed this life on August 24, 2009 after a brave struggle with a degenerative muscle disease which left her body broken but never diminished her sharp mind and independent spirit. She was born April 26, 1926 in Waverly, WA. Loretta enjoyed 53 years of marriage with her husband, William R. Atwood, who passed away in 2008. The beloved matriarch of our family, she loved us freely and generously, providing a word of support or a gesture of kindness and taught us about strength of character and mind. Loretta was the fearless leader of her bowling team, who bravely piled her van full of women and traveled to tournaments all across America. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, playing card games, and scrabble, and running her own furniture upholstering business. She will always be remembered as the loving mother of Carol Park of Lansing, MI, Frank (Deb) Atwood of Danville, IL, and Steve (Margaret) Atwood of Danville, IL. The devoted grandmother of John (Shannon) and Jamie (deceased); Steve (Christy), Debbie (Scott), and Christopher (Amanda); Lori (Keith) Lisa (John) and Jennifer (Daniel). The proud great grandmother of Desiree, Michael, and Alexis; Steven, Devan, Kaitlyn, and Jasmine; Leylah, Jaiden, and Raenyn. The family would like to thank the friends and staff that cared for Loretta at the Vermilion Manor Nursing Home. A Celebration of Lorettas Life will be held at 4:30 pm, Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center 3940 N. Vermilion St. Danville, IL with Pastor Raymie Gordon officiating. Visitation will be held from 3-4:30 pm Thursday afternoon at the funeral home. Following the service, she will be cremated according to her wishes.
