The Lord called Loretta Cowell, 76, of Westville, home on Friday February 4, 2022. She was born in Danville, IL on April 12, 1945, the daughter of Anton and Anne Betkis. Both parents preceded her in death. On November 6, 1971 Loretta (Betkis) Cowell married Mylon Cowell, who preceded her in death almost two years prior. Loretta also leaves behind three siblings, Jim (Diane) Betkis of Merrimac, WI, Donna (Michael) Lovejoy of Westville, IL and Kathy (Stan) Pintar of Williamsport, IN; her six children and their families, Keith (Lisa) Cowell of Guam, USA and their children, Devin, Grant, and Kindle Rose, Matt (Erica) Cowell of Morris, IL and their children, Griffyn, Gwynn, and Myles, Eric Cowell of Westville, IL, Lynette Evans of Tilton, IL and their children, Teddy and Anna, Doug (Megan) Cowell of Normal, IL and their child Kinsley, Carol (Tim) Poletti of Troy, IL and their children, Brenden and Emilie. Loretta attended Schlarman High School in Danville, IL. She then continued her education by graduating from St. Elizabeths College of Nursing program in Danville, IL. After becoming a registered nurse her deep compassion for people and caring spirit drove her to be a devoted nurse for over 50 years. She had such a kind spirit, and so many of her friends and co-workers referred to her as sweet Loretta. Some of her time in clinicals was spent at (St. Francis Hospital-Pediatrics) Childrens Hospital in Peoria, IL, and then later at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Danville, IL. For a while she worked as a traveling nurse enjoying such locations as Jamaica, Canada, and Florida. She later continued her work as an RN stateside at the VA Medical Center in Danville, IL. After moving to Pontiac, IL she worked at St. James Hospital and Humiston Haven Retirement Home. She then spent the remainder of her time as an RN at (St. Elizabeths/Lakeview) Provena United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville, IL. She retired from nursing in May of 2010 to spend more time with her husband (Mylon) and extended family. During their retirement the devoted couple kept very busy with countless visits to see their children and grandchildren. They also had many family adventures including various cruises and other destinations such as the Dakotas, Hawaii, Australia, and New Zealand. Loretta was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. Ever since she was a little girl she was very artistically talented. She had always enjoyed drawing, painting, photographing, crafting, and especially later on, card making and scrapbooking. Her passion for art and her caring nurturing spirit was faithfully displayed in her love for creating countless birthday cards, holiday cards, and custom scrapbooks for her many loved ones. Visitation will be held on Thursday February 17, 2022 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Westville, Illinois 414 S State St. Westville, Illinois 61883. Her funeral mass will be held on Friday February 18, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. Marys Catholic Church in Westville, IL. Burial Services will be held directly afterwards at the VA Pavilion in Danville, IL. Loretta will be laid to rest in the VA Cemetery with her lifelong love, Mylon.
