Miss Linda Kay Landis passed away October 5, 2011, at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center, Danville, IL, due to complications from corticobasal degeneration, a neurological condition. She was 71 and lived at the Waters of Covington. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, in the Sunset Funeral Home Covington Chapel, 420 3rd St., Covington, IN. The family will receive friends for an hour prior to the service in the chapel. She is survived by her brother David (Marta) Covington, IN; sister Lois Kathleen (Jeffery) Kurowski, Fairfax, VA.; nephew Bryan (Ashley) Landis and great-niece Madison Landis, West Lafayette, IN; niece Cara (Jason) Kitchen, Indianapolis, IN, several beloved cousins and many very dear friends in Texas and Indiana. Miss Landis was born June 3, 1940, to Frederick M. and Lois M. Landis in Clinton, IN. She spent her entire childhood and young adulthood living on a farm east of Dana, IN. She graduated from Dana High School in 1958 in a class of 11. Miss Landis was a professional secretary for 50 years. After high-school graduation, she worked for two years for the Dean Phipps Ford dealership in Dana. She then moved to Terre Haute, Ind., with her cousin Rowena Botner and worked for a coal company there. In 1961, the two moved to Chicago, IL. Miss Landis worked for several years in truck leasing for Hertz, Avis and GM Trucks; her last employer in Chicago was Keith V. Rockey, Esq., an intellectual property attorney. In 1971, Miss Landis moved to Houston, TX, where she worked for many years with Neal Powers, Jr., Esq., an attorney specializing in oil and gas law with the firm of Butler, Binion, Rice, Cook and Knapp. She was active in the early 1980s with the professional club Desk & Derrick, for which she edited a prizewinning newsletter. After Mr. Powers' retirement, Miss Landis worked part-time for five years while attending the University of Houston. She graduated with honors from the University of Houston in 1990 with a major in anthropology and a minor in political science. Since the late 1990s, Miss Landis worked for Dominion Exploration and Production (originally Louis Dreyfus Natural Gas), from which she retired in 2007 due to her illness. She moved back to Indiana to be near family, living in Park Square Manor, Avon, IN. She moved to the Waters of Covington in 2010. Miss Landis loved animals and loved her cats, Mollie, Greyboy, Sophie and Patches very much. The ashes of Mollie and Greyboy will be buried with her. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, on the HSPCA website is (hspca.convio.net).
