Linda 'Coach' Darlene Richter

Linda Richter, born on July 12, 1942, passed away July 29, 2024, leaving behind a legacy cherished by many. She was preceded in death by her parents: Wesley and Mildred (Eldridge) Richter, her siblings: Dorothy Mitchell, Howard Richter, Margaret Brothers Hersh, Frank Richter, Ethel Eichhorst, Celta Fern Richter, Norma McVey and Robert Richter. She is survived by a brother: Tom Richter and a sister-in-law: Karen Richter. Linda is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom remember her with deep affection. A member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), she was a beloved teacher, coach, aunt, dog mom, and sister. She is also survived by her dog, Scrappy, who she spent months befriending after someone dropped him off in the area.

For many years, Linda was a member of the Kickapoo Carvers and loved nature and collecting rocks and carving walking sticks and wood plaques. Visitors frequently left with a stick personalized for themselves. In later years, she was seen driving her dog Scrappy around to get her favorite coffee. Linda was proud of her "Little Bit of Heaven" and she could often be found tending to the garden and pond.

Linda was an instrumental figure in the implementation and growth of girls sports following the Title IX legislation. Her teaching and coaching career began in 1964 at Farmer City Mansfield High School where she played a pivotal role in establishing and nurturing girls athletic programs. She coached various sports, including basketball, bowling, field hockey, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball with her teams achieving significant milestones. She was beloved by her students and was a member of the Illinois Coaches Association for Girls and Women Sports Hall of Fame and is credited with developing girls sports in the state.

Despite the many challenges and limited resources, Lindas dedication and passion for sports ensured that girls had the opportunity to participate and excel. Her contributions to the athletic community and the lives she touched throughout her career remain a testament to her commitment and love for teaching and coaching.

Lindas influence extended beyond sports, as she was deeply involved in her community, always willing to lend a helping hand and support her students and colleagues. Her legacy will continue to inspire and motivate future generations of athletes and educators.

Linda Richter will be remembered for her pioneering spirit, her dedication to education and athletics, and the love and joy she brought to her family, friends and students. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life for Linda will be held at 10AM on Saturday, August 3, 2024, with Pastor Todd Creason officiating at Muncie Baptist Church 205 Main Street Muncie, Illinois 61857. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, August 2, 2024, from 4PM-6PM at Muncie Baptist Church and on Saturday, August 3, 2024, from 9AM-10AM at the church.

Memorials in Lindas name may be made to the Vermilion County Historical Museum or Muncie Baptist Church.
