Quaker, Ind. -- Lessie V. Phelps, 85, of Quaker, passed away at 4:35 p.m. CST Monday, February 7, 2011 at the VA Illiana Health Care Systems in Danville, Illinois. He was born October 2, 1925 in Butler County, Kentucky the son of the late Ben L. and Doomie Johnson Phelps. He married Barbara L. Howard on February 3, 1947 in Owensboro, Kentucky. She preceded him in death on September 16, 2007. Survivors include: two daughters, Judith Moody of Westville, Illinois and Mary Christine "Chris"(Tom)Beaven of Clinton, Indiana; six sons, John(Vickey)Phelps of St. Bernice, Indiana; Leonard T.(Patti)Phelps of Cayuga, Indiana; Stephen "Steve"(Cindy)Phelps of Dana, Indiana; Anthony W.(Lori Lee)Phelps of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Michael R.(Cheryl)Phelps of Cayuga, Indiana and Joseph M. Phelps of Dana, Indiana; nineteen grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one sister, Emma J. Renfrow of Villa Grove, Illinois. He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Lessie was a self employed truck driver and farmer. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Army. He received the Purple Heart and two silver stars while overseas. Lessie enjoyed raising cattle and horses, farming and spending time with his family. Cremation was chosen. A Celebration of Life service will be held by the family at a later date. Contributions may be made to the VA Illiana Health Care Systems, C/O Palliative Care Ward, Bld. 101-4, 1900 East Main Street, Danville, Illinois 61832. DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana in charge of arrangements.
