Covington, Ind. - Leland (Leo) Keith Lyons, 87, went home to be with the Lord at 8:11 a.m. EST on Monday, November 26, 2018 at his residence in Covington, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.
He was born September 9, 1931, in Perrysville, Indiana, the son of the late William Nelson and Nellie Edith (Wood) Lyons. He married Dorothy Mae Callahan on September 30, 1951 at the First Baptist Church in Covington. She preceded him in death on November 26, 2004.
Surviving are: one son, Michael (Kristi) Lyons of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two daughters, Teresa (Scott) Palmer of Richmond, Kentucky, and Patty Lyons of Covington, Indiana. Patty has been her dad's full-time caregiver for the past 7 1/2 years, with much appreciated help from Jeff Lawrence.
Also surviving are two step-grandchildren, Kimber and Nathan.
Other survivors include one sister, Josephine Lyons of Covington, Indiana, one sister-in-law, Martha Lyons of Clearwater, Florida, and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death, along with his wife and parents were his siblings, Edith Eileen, Glenwood, William Lester, Bobbie Gene, James Melvin, Rhea Lorraine, Kenneth Leon, and Darrel Lynn.
Leo graduated from Covington High School in 1949. After his marriage to Dorothy in 1951, he was drafted into the Army and served from January 1952 - December 1953 in the Korean Conflict. He helped build and later worked at Olin/Flexel in Covington for 31 years. He retired from there at the end of 1987. He then worked with his wife Dorothy at the Fountain County Recorder's Office.
Leo was an avid gun collector. He also enjoyed camping, bluegrass music, mushroom hunting, and working in his strawberry patch. Even though he couldn't read music, he had a beautiful singing voice. Leo was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Tilton, Illinois and the American Legion Post #291 in Covington.
