Newport, Ind. - Lawrence "Leon" Herbert, 75, of Newport, passed away at 9:20 a.m. EDT Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at his residence. He was born December 31, 1938 in Belle Union, Indiana, the son of the late Lloyd Benjamin and Elsie Mae Lawrence Herbert. He married Carolyn M. Reffett on November 28, 1970 in Rockville, Indiana. She survives. Other survivors include his six children, Terri Rico of Mericopa, Arizona; Timala Hack of Tucson, Arizona; John Herbert of Florence, Arizona; Lawrence "Butch" Herbert, Jr. of Warner Robins, Georgia; Michelle York of Marion, Indiana and Andrew McClure of Tucson, Arizona; sixteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Southerland of Cloverdale, Indiana and special sister-in-law, Jackie Balding of Newport, Indiana; specail brother-in-law, Warren L. Reffett of Kingman, Arizona, and several nieces and nephews. Leon was preceded in death by two son-in-laws, one grandson and one great granddaughter. Leon was a retired diesel mechanic. He was a 1957 graduate of Belle Union High School. Leon enjoyed working on his cars, hunting, fishing, camping, country music, reading western novels, dancing and watching NASCAR and his favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Funeral services: 4 p.m. EDT Sunday, July 13, 2014 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Pastor Ramona Trover; Burial: Thomas Cemetery, Newport, Indiana; Visitation: 2 p.m. EDT Sunday, July 13, 2014 until time of services at the funeral home. The family request contributions to the Hospice VNA of the Wabash Valley, 400 8th Avenue, Terre Haute, Indiana 47804.
