Lawrence "Lefty" Varvel, 97, passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 nine days before his 98th birthday, at the Danville VA Illiana Healthcare System. He was born on September 10, 1923 the son of Ernest and Bertha (Lovelace) Varvel in Blue Mound, IL.
Lefty was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty (Seilhymer) Varvel, who passed in 2018; his son, Charles Varvel, who passed in 2014; along with 8 siblings.
Lefty leaves behind his daughter in law, Diane Varvel; grandchildren, Rhonda Varvel, Charlie (Michelle) Varvel, and Brian (Toya) Varvel; two great grandchildren, Bailee and Tanner; and two great great grandchildren, Jaxon and Lux.
Lefty served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. After the military he worked for the Interstate Water Company in Danville for 32 years until he retired in 1988. During his free time, he enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears. For the past 2.5 years he lived at Liberty Estates in Danville. Lefty was a hard-working family man. He loved spending time with family and the people he loved.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, Illinois, 3940 N Vermilion St. Danville, Illinois 61834. Officiating will be Pastor Raymie Gordon. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Danville. There will be a 30-minute visitation prior to the funeral service starting at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
