Born January 23, 1954, son of Walter and Thelma Carter, left this life to join those gone before him Monday, June 21,2021.
LaVonya leaves behind his soul mate and love of his life Lori. Also surviving are their three children Quincy Carter of Texas; Andrew (Rebecca) Campbell of Texas; Marcie (Todd) Britton of Indiana. Also surviving are grandchildren Khai , Elijah, Quincy, Sayde, Quincy and Heavenly; Sofia, Landen, Eden, Owen, Wyatt and Ben. And one great grandchild Kason.
Also surviving are brothers Walter (Amy) of Normal IL; Tony (Shelby) of Franklin, GA; Ruben of Lithia Springs, GA; sister Felicia Dardy of West Point GA; sister/brother-in-law Chris & Kervin Roberts
LaVonya enjoyed fishing, watching his Cardinals and Bears play and spending as much time as possible with his grand babies, family and special friends William Cook and JD Lorie Bridges.
LaVonya served in the US Army and later retired from the VA in Danville where he worked as a Peer Support Specialist in the mental health field. Walking the halls of VA you could hear his infectious laugh as he shared jokes and stories with his fellow Veterans.
LaVonya had a servants heart. He used his past to help others lead a brighter future. Over the years, LaVonya was able to share his story with the youth at Lincolns Challenge, as well as various groups at church events. His job at the VA enabled him to live out his calling to mentor others who were heading down a similar path that he had already experienced. LaVonya kept it real - he met the veteran at their level and truly listened to them. Everyone walked away a better person for having known him.
He will never know the many peoples lives he truly touched and impacted simply by being the open transparent person he was.
As LaVonya would say "it gets greater later" and he has now gone on to that greater place.
