LaVerne H. Carroll, 86, of Georgetown, went to be with her Lord on August 9, 2010, at Provena USMC, Danville. She was born in Livingston, Montana, on January 1, 1924, the daughter of Linus and Selma (Olson) Hoots, both deceased. She married Kenneth Carroll on January 12, 1944, in Lexington, NC, near Fort Jackson. He preceded her in death on August 29, 1987. She is survived by: her son, Stephen Carroll of Georgetown; her daughter, Cynthia Carroll of Jefferson City, MO; her special brother-in-law, Wayne Carroll of Neoga, IL; her special sisters-in-law, Freda (James) Dodson & Earline Bowlin, both of Mt. Vernon, IL; her four cousins, Ron Fons of Naples, FL, Bob Mathis of Conroe, TX, Karen Waits of Chaska, MN, & Audrey Dowd of Branford, CT; her many special nieces & nephews; and dear friends. She was preceded in death by: her special sisters-in-law, Rosella Fowler, Doris Pickett and Jeanne Carroll. LaVerne graduated from Mt. Vernon High School and then Southern Illinois University. In her early years, she resided at Mt. Vernon and Jefferson County. The family then moved to Georgetown in 1962. She and her husband owned and operated the Western Auto Store for twenty-four years. She taught school for thirteen years around Mt. Vernon and then in Georgetown with a combined total of thirty-five years and retiring in 1985. She was a member of the Vermilion County Teachers Association. In her spare time, LaVerne enjoyed reading, doing crafts, and traveling, but most of all she loved spending time with family. She was raised in the Bonnie Methodist Church and then attended Georgetown United Methodist Church. A visitation for LaVerne will be held 5pm " 8pm, Thursday, August 12, 2010, at Sunsets Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home, A Life Celebration Home, 200 E West St, Georgetown. A service will be held at 12:00pm, Saturday, August 14, 2010, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon, IL, with a visitation to be held 2 hours prior to the service. Pastor Matt Filicsky of Georgetown United Methodist Church and Pastor Bruce Gordon of Mt. Vernon Wesley United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon. Memorial donations may be given in LaVernes name to Georgetown United Methodist Church or Mt. Vernon Wesley United Methodist Church or Arthritis Foundation-PO Box 96280, Washington, DC 20077-7491.
