Larry McConkey, 75, of Danville, passed away on December 13, 2018 at his home.
He was born in Decatur, IL on August 31, 1943, the son of Lawrence and Juanita McConkey, of Weldon, IL.
He married Donna Kay Phillips on September 22, 1963. She survives along with other survivors, son Scott (Betsy) McConkey of Avon, IN; daughter Suzanne (Rich) Goben of Danville; son Rob McConkey of Bismarck; grandchildren Samantha, Kayci, Ella, Avery and Eli; and sister Linda (Jim) Downey of Avon, IN.
Larry said his greatest accomplishment was 55 years of marriage with Kay, the "Love of his Life". First and foremost, Larry was a family man who enjoyed supporting the various endeavors of his children, grandchildren and his beloved dog Dolly and cat Scruffy. He loved restoring wood furniture, woodworking projects and house trimming/finishing work.
Larry grew up on a farm between Argenta and Weldon, IL attending all 12 grades at Argenta. His bachelors degree was from Illinois State University in 1966, with certifications in special education and elementary education. His masters degree in 1973, also from ISU, was Industrial Technology. Larrys professional career began in Decatur as a special needs teacher. He then held various consulting/management positions with Illinois Department of Mental Health.
The family moved to Danville in 1974, where he became the President and Chief Executive of REHAB Products and Services, leading its development for 31 years, and is now named WorkSource Enterprises.
Larry was in the Danville AMBUCS Club from 1974 to 1984, establishing and leading the development of Summer Camp for Disabled. He was a member of Bismarck Lions Club from 1985 to 1995 and entered the Danville Rotary Club from 1995 to 2006. Larry was a Rotary Club "Paul Harris Fellow". In 1974 he was inducted into Phi Delta Kappa International, and was also a professional member of the National Rehabilitation Association from 1971 to 2005.
Larry served on the Danville Area Chamber of Commerces Board of Directors throughout the 80s and 90s. He was a graduate of Leadership Danvilles Class IV in 1990 and chaired their Quality-of-Life programs for many years. He was also a founding member of the Vermilion County Job Training Partnerships Board in 1984, serving until 2002.
Larry was very involved with his childrens education. He chaired Bismarck-Hennings Parent Advisory Council through the late 70s and into the mid 80s. He also served as the School Boards Representative on the countywide reorganization and consolidation committee in the 80s. Larry served on the Bismarck-Henning School Board from 2009-13.
Little League baseball was one of Larrys favorite activities, coaching and managing teams at levels A, B and C for 12 years, in both Danville and Bismarck.
Larry was a member of Ridgeview Baptist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees from 2000 to 2003, serving as Chairman of the Board in 2002.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 North Vermilion Street, Danville, IL 61834. A celebration of Larrys life will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018 at 10 AM at Sunset Funeral Home with Pastor Joe McConkey (nephew) officiating. Graveside services to follow in Weldon, IL at 1 PM at Weldon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to a fund of the familys choosing at BHRA School District to support academics and extracurriculars.
