Larry Dean Collom, 84, born November 24, 1932 in Yankee Branch died at his home in rural Georgetown early Friday morning, March 17, 2017. He married his wife on September 11, 1954 at Liberty Church in Georgetown. His wife of 62 years, Susanne {Neild} Collom survives. Also surviving are his children, Charles (Becky) of Georgetown, Thomas (Valerie) of Mascoutah, IL, Brenda Opperman of Maryville, IL, Mark (Sheila) of Galesville, WI, and Lora (Andy) Kyger of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Justin (Sarah), Nicholas (Brandi), Bradley, Jennifer (Dean), Christopher (Britney), Ashley (Jeff), Weslee (Nick), Neil (Chelsie), Matthew, Zachary, Lucas, Norris, and Emily; great-grandchildren, Lilie, Lorynn, Bryleigh, Charleigh, Samantha, Natileigh, Alexander, Kiersten, Brantley, Lathan, Kapree, Lucy, and Maxwell; siblings, Curtis of Houma, LA, Patsy Green of Danville, and Alan of Georgetown; as well as many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Cathy, grandchildren, Nathan and Natasha, and brother, Stanley. Larry graduated Georgetown High School in 1951 and then went on to graduate the University of Illinois in 1956. He earned his Master's degrees from the U of I and University of Colorado. Larry served proudly in the US Army ROTC during college and served the US Army tank division in Fort Knox, KY. He was a teacher in Arenzville, Tolono, Scotland, and Rossville, IL before settling in District 118 in Danville at North Ridge Junior High. He taught there from 1963 until he retired in 1988. Larry was a member and Elder of Liberty Church in Georgetown. Among many things, Larry liked to be in his garden and photography. He wrote stories and did woodworking. He loved to travel. Larry built his home in the early 1960's and he took great pride in his home and community. He kept the roads and area around his home free of any litter. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Yankee Branch. Larry taught his family the value of hard work, the importance of family, and a love for God and others. He served his family with great generosity and a willing spirit. A celebration of Larry's life will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Sunset Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home, 200 E. West Street, Georgetown. Pastor Glenn Thompson will officiate. He will be laid to rest at Whitlock Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, March 20, 2017 from 4-8 PM at the funeral home.
