Kurt W. Cruppenink, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on July 12, 2026, in Champaign, Illinois, at the age of 65. Born on March 29, 1961, in Danville, Illinois, Kurt’s life was a tapestry woven with warmth, kindness, and a generous spirit that touched everyone who had the pleasure to know him.
Kurt’s early years in Danville were marked by a keen curiosity and a burgeoning love for stories—whether found within the pages of his favorite comic books or the history books he so often pored over. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in political science, an achievement reflecting his commitment to understanding the world and engaging meaningfully in his community.
In his professional life, Kurt dedicated many years as the tax assessor for Georgetown Township. Friends and colleagues alike remember his integrity, compassion, and diligence in a role that demanded fairness and heart—qualities Kurt carried into every aspect of his life.
In June of 2016, Kurt married the love of his life, Sherri, and together they built a joyful partnership filled with shared laughter, adventures, and unwavering support. Just last month, they celebrated ten wonderful years of marriage—a milestone that brought smiles and warm memories to their entire family.
Family was at the center of Kurt’s world. He is survived by his devoted wife Sherri; his cherished children Kari Elliot, Kyle (Jordan) Cruppenink, Coleen (Alex) Wakeland, stepson Tristan (Allison) Lauderdale; and his adoring grandchildren Lydia and Audra Wakeland, Maxine and Elijah Cruppenink. Kurt’s love reached outward to his brother Craig (Connie) Cruppenink, nieces Katie Jo Woods and Marianne Cruppenink; sisters-in-law Tammy (Dave) Roseman, Michelle Harris, and Mary Thomas; brother-in-law Greg (Nicia) Harris. Among his dearest friends was Dwayne High. Along with many more family and friends.
Although Kurt now joins his mother Maryann Marsh, step-father Robert Marsh, and father George Cruppenink in eternal rest, his legacy and memory will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Kurt was a beacon of kindness, always offering a smile that put others at ease. His giving heart showed in every interaction—ever charitable, he contributed often to many organizations, with a special devotion to the American Heart Association.
Passionate about life’s joys, Kurt was a true enthusiast. He was an avid book reader and comic book collector, particularly drawn to horror comics and the wonder of classic Universal Monsters. Halloween was his favorite holiday, a celebration that lived year-round in his home, where he delighted in finding and displaying decorations whenever possible. Kurt’s love of horror extended to movies, which he enjoyed sharing with anyone brave enough to watch alongside him.
He was an ardent Green Bay Packers fan, rooted for the Cincinnati Reds, and cheered on Illini basketball— whether in the stands or from his favorite chair at home. Music filled his life as well, and he cherished the sound and spectacle of the band KISS.
Not only a consumer of stories but also a creator, Kurt wrote two books, further testament to his lifelong passion for writing and storytelling.
Above all, those whom Kurt loved and befriended will remember his unyielding kindness, the generosity that radiated from his spirit, and his ever-present smile. He leaves behind not only memories but also a deep sense of gratitude among those whose lives he enriched.
