Kay Imogene (Sparks) Ehler

Kay Ehler passed away peacefully on May 13, 2023 in Champaign, IL. She was 87 years old.

The second of four children, Kay was born in Terre Haute, IN to Bert and Opal (Mullen) Sparks on February 11, 1936. She graduated from Rantoul Township High School in 1953, where she was a member of the cheerleading squad, choir, women’s basketball team, and theater. It was here that Kay would meet the love of her life, Vernon, whom she married shortly after her graduation in 1953. After Vernon was drafted by the Army in 1956, they were stationed in Germany for two years before returning to Illinois. What followed was a long and loving life starting in Penfield before they ultimately settled in the Rantoul family home that they shared for nearly 50 years.

Kay was a fierce protector of her family. Those that had the pleasure of knowing her remember the love and compassion that she showed everyone around her.  Known for being a fantastic cook, her goulash, spaghetti, and sloppy joes were legendary.  It was not uncommon for her and Vernon to hold court at the kitchen table telling stories and entertaining anyone that had the pleasure of joining them, especially during holidays and Sunday family meals.  For many of us that kitchen table and the memories we shared there will remain with us forever.  Kay was at her best taking care of those around her and she leaves an everlasting legacy with those that loved her.

Kay was preceded in death by her high school sweetheart and devoted husband of 67 years, Vernon Ehler. In addition to her husband, Kay was predeceased by her daughter, Dana Buerkett, son-in-law, Jon Buerkett, granddaughter, Morgan Buerkett, brother, James Sparks, and sisters, Patricia Rasmussen and Shirley “Sue” Sparks.  Kay is survived by her son Dane (Lisa) Ehler and daughter Danette (Dave) Higinbotham; six grandchildren whom she absolutely adored; and five great-grandchildren.  In addition, her family would like to thank Vicki Roderick for the loving care making sure she was comfortable in the final chapter of her life.

Kay will be laid to rest alongside her “Vernie” at Beckman Cemetery during a ceremony on Saturday, May 27th at 10:00. In her honor, the family asks that you remember the small things like a story and a great meal with family and friends.  Those memories are what leaves a true legacy.
