Kathleen "Kay" Ray, 78, of Danville passed away on August 7, 2021 at OSF Sacred Heart in Danville. She was born on March 1, 1943 in Denver, Colorado daughter of Frank and Dorothy McGough. They along with her brothers Jimmy and Tom McGough, and brother in-law, Jack Ward preceded her in death.
Kay was previously married to Ben Ray, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her children Anne Ray, Betsy (Brian) Heidrick, Joanna Smart, John Ray, and Barbara (Tim) Berenz and her grandchildren Ashleigh (Kyle) McDaniel, Jacob (Jennifer) Heidrick, Clayton (Rachel) Heidrick, Curtis (Callie) Heidrick, Abraham and Lacie Heidrick, Maxeen Smart, Addison (MacKenzie) Smart, Evan Ray, Kyra (Laine) Meade, Brett Berenz, Brittani Berenz, and Ryan Berenz. She also leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren, her siblings Fran Ward, Mike (Sharon) McGough, Meg Kocal and many nieces & nephews.
Kay loved her family and was a stay-at-home mom for many years. When she decided to jump into the workforce, she started out as the head cook at St. Pauls grade school. Kay later moved on to work at United Samaritans Medical Center as cashier. Kay always wanted to be a nurse. Once the children were grown, she did just that. She went back to school to become an RN along with obtaining her BSN. While working as a nurse at USMC, she achieved the status of charge nurse and enjoyed teaching CPR classes in her spare time. Kay also volunteered as an election judge for many years.
Kay was a social butterfly. She was always on the go - out and about. She had her lifelong friends, who met every month to chat, eat and play Bunco. She also met with her TOPs group, running the check ins each week. Kay enjoyed meeting up with her dear friends, Val, Tina, Nancy & Clark for lunch and shopping. She also belonged to a Stroke Survivors group, and took part in many activities and groups with her church family at St. Pauls. Kay was a lifetime reader of romance and mystery novels. When not reading she enjoyed watching the Cubs games, HGTV and the Hallmark channels. Kay enjoyed the beauty of Thomas Kinkades artwork, collecting fairies, traveling, cinnamon rolls, chocolate, rummage sales and Dollar General deals.
A visitation for Kay will be held on Friday, August 20, 2021 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at St. Pauls Catholic Church, located 1303 N Walnut Street in Danville. A Funeral Mass will follow the visitation at the church at 12:00 noon. She will be buried at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.
