June Marie Smothers, 85, of Danville, IL passed away at 6:10 P.M. on April 16, 2016 at Pleasant Meadows Nursing Home in Chrisman. June was born on June 11, 1930 in Danville to Lee and Jessie (Kilby) Newell. She married Robert "Smokey" Smothers on October 4, 1947. He preceded her in death. June is a survived by Sharon (Rick) Knight and Casey (Beth) Smothers all of Danville, IL; three grandsons, Andrew Chase Smothers of Kingsport, TN, Cameron Scott Smothers of Orlando, FL and Aaron Robert Smothers of Champaign, IL; a sister, Rosemary (Jim) Thomas, and a brother, Steve (Rose) Newell; and numerous nieces and nephews She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and five sisters. June enjoyed her grandsons so much. She loved to play games and climb trees with them. June also loved to travel, especially to Florida during the winter time. June was a housewife and later in life worked for American Greetings. June fought for years with a horrible disease that very few recognized or understood. For her own safety she was placed at Pleasant Meadows Christian Village. Her son requests all who cared about her read the book "The 36 Hour Day". Before going into the nursing home, June was a member of Farmers Chapel. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Pleasant Meadows Nursing Home. They took such good care of June and truly enjoyed her. Memorials can be made in June's name to the Alzheimer's Association or to Pleasant Meadows Nursing Home. June requested cremation and will be laid to rest at the Danville VA cemetery so she can be with her husband.
