J.R. Young

Cayuga, Ind. - J.R. Young, 84, of rural Cayuga, passed away at 5:10 a.m. EST Wednesday, December 25, 2019 at his residence.

He was born October 21, 1935 in Mattoon, Illinois the son of the late Harold and Sarah (Cromwell) Young.

J.R. first married Mary Loretta Stokes. He later married Marcella J. Kester on December 6, 1983 in Kingsland, Georgia. She preceded him in death on April 28, 2019.

Survivors include his children: Jim A. Young of Georgetown, Illinois; Pam (Kenny) Elliott of Seminole, Oklahoma; Cheryl Young of Shawnee, Oklahoma; Susan (Wes) Womack of Seminole, Oklahoma and John (Diana) Young of Tecumseh, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren: Jeremy, Ricky, Ryan, Matthew, Kendra, Tabitha, Sarah, Emily and Jessica; fourteen great grandchildren, and his cat, Baby.

J.R. was preceded in death by his daughter: Deborah Young; son: Robert Wayne Young, and sister: Ann Hanna.

J.R. farmed in the area for most of his life. He was a 1953 graduate of Georgetown High School and was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the United States Army. J.R. was a former Vermillion County Commissioner. He was a member of the Cayuga American Legion Post 263 and the Wabash Valley Steam and Gas Club. He operated J.R. Trucking and Young's Elevator. J.R. also worked ten years on the railroad. He enjoyed working on antique tractors, taking trips to Florida and going to the many Flea Markets and seeing the manatees. He was a fixture at the Mowery Auction in Milford, Illinois, Beck's Seed Show in Atlanta, Indiana and the Steak -n- Shake in Danville, Illinois. J.R. especially enjoyed watching his granddaughter, Kendra, on Sunday's on the R.F.D. channel competing in Barrell Racing.

Funeral services: 2 p.m. EST Monday, December 30, 2019 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Jackie Bowling and David Nesbitt; Burial with honors: McKendree Cemetery, Georgetown, Illinois; Visitation: 1 p.m. EST until time of services at the funeral home.
