Joyce Schmitt

Joyce Elaine Schmitt, 91 of Danville, IL passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2022 at 11:13 pm at OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center. She was born September 29, 1930, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was the daughter of Joseph R. and Clara (Gregory) Cassady. She married Michael R. Schmitt on May 7, 1951 in Jeffersonville, IN. They were married for 70 years. He preceded her in death on January 11, 2022.

Joyces son, Larry, preceded her in death, on July 13, 2017. One sister and one brother also preceded her in death.

Joyce is survived by two sons, Michael T. Schmitt (Susan) and Steven J. Schmitt, both of Danville and one daughter, Sandra E. Schmitt of Covington, IN. Also surviving is her brother, Paul G. Cassady (Buzz), 2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Joyce was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Danville. She loved her church. She served as a deacon several years, worked in the Mouse House, folded bulletins weekly and helped in the office when needed. She always looked forward to the Saturday luncheons with her church friends. Joyce served on the CRIS Senior Services board for 9 years. She was also active in her Neighborhood Association. Joyce and Mike looked forward to spring. They would start their plants from seeds. Mike planted his at the farm in Eugene, IN and Joyce planted hers in the back yard. Each year the challenge was to see who grew the first red tomato and the largest tomato. Dozens of tomatoes were given to senior citizens, in Danville, each year. One of Joyce's highlights was planning 'farm day' at their farm in Eugene, IN. Friends from the church would all meet for lunch and then to the farm for an afternoon of laughs, stories and good times. Everyone would go home with fresh produce.

There will be a memorial service Thursday, July 14, 2022 at 10:00 am C.S.T. at the First Presbyterian Church (100 N. Franklin St., Danville, IL 61832) Pastor Ann Schwartz will officiate. Lunch will follow the service. There will be a private family burial at a later time. Her arrangements were entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N Vermilion St, Danville, IL 61834. Memorials may be made to the church at First Presbyterian Church, 100 N. Franklin St., Danville, IL 61832.
